Aidan Schumer took the top individual prize at the 2022 Canadian University Championship.
UBC Recreation is holding its Free Week from Tuesday, May 24 to Monday, May 30.
Despite a courageous performance from UBC men's hockey team, taking the game to double overtime, the Patriotes knocked them out of the tournament by handing them a 2–1 loss.
While continuing to train even during uncertainty of their chance of competing again, the T-Birds athletes showcased it during the UBC Open on March 26 and 27, their first home meet of the season.
After winning 1–0 in the fourth and final game of the weekend series, the T-Birds secured a split weekend series.
The event began in 2018 and ran for two years prior to taking a hiatus following the COVID-19 restrictions.
UBC women's hockey team secured their fourth Canada West championship after a weekend sweep against the Saskatchewan Huskies last week. The T-Birds will head to the U Sports National Tournament in PEI happening from March 24 to 27 in an attempt to capture their first ever national championship title.
The T-Birds spent the weekend at Kenyon Court at Mount Royal University, looking to advance to the quarter finals for the Canada West championships, hosted by the University of Alberta. The ‘Birds faced off against the University of Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal University Cougars.
This season was nothing short of impressive, and with a first-round bye, the UBC men's hockey team will now set their sights on returning to the conference finals, and reaching their ultimate goal of playing for the University Cup.
With a smile, Butenschön remarked that his team will take 24 hours to celebrate the victory, before turning their full attention to the Canada West finals. UBC will head to Edmonton to take on the University of Alberta Golden Bears in two weeks time, with the winner taking home a championship banner.
For Toth, the opportunity has been the cherry on top of an astonishing final season with UBC. He currently leads the Canada West in nearly every goaltending statistic, posting a .930 save percentage and a 1.99 GAA with a record of 10–3–1.
“There's literally no standards for your body type, or what you look like,” Bauder said, encouraging others to not shy away from getting involved. “You have a place no matter what, so don't be afraid to try out.”
The T-Birds left victorious with a win against the Spartans. This puts the T-Birds second in the Canada West standings and they are two points ahead of the University of Manitoba Bisons.
