Women’s volleyball is going for national gold starting Friday

Women’s volleyball is hosting U Sports nationals from March 17–19 at the War Memorial Gym.

Trinity Western University, Brock University, Mount Royal University, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Dalhousie University, Manitoba University and McGill University are joining UBC in their fight for gold. The Thunderbirds are entering nationals ranked seventh out of eight teams.

At the helm of the team is head coach Doug Reimer, the winningest coach in U Sports women's volleyball history. The Thunderbirds have garnered eight national championships and five Canada West titles with Reimer.

The last time UBC took home national gold was in 2019 against the Toronto Metropolitan University Bold in a five-set thriller.

Led by Canada West libero of the year Kacey Jost, second-team all-stars Elise Petit and Cara Kovacs and all-rookie team member Issy Robertshaw, the ‘Birds have something to prove with the opportunity to get their 13th national title, especially after coming off a loss to the University of Manitoba Bisons in the Canada West quarter-final.

This is the third time UBC is hosting the championships — it first hosted in 1974 and second in 1983. Both of those runs led to podium performances for the ‘Birds, winning gold and bronze, respectfully.

The Thunderbirds will take on number two Brock Badgers in the U Sports quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Friday at the War Memorial Gym.

Tournament passes are sold out, but session tickets are available for $5 for students.
