UBC Athletics postponed the annual Winter Classic due to the current health guidelines from the BC Provincial Health Officer (PHO).
The Winter Classic was set to take place on January 21 with the Thunderbirds taking on the University of Calgary Dinos.
The T-Birds will continue to host the Dinos with spectators allowed, but the elevated festivities of the Winter Classic will not be seen during the event.
All T-Birds games will proceed as planned with the exception of having 50 per cent audience capacity at each game.
Women’s hockey will host Mount Royal University at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Arena this Friday. Both women’s and men’s volleyball will host Thompson Rivers University at the War Memorial gym this Friday as well. Schedules for rest of the T-Birds teams can be found here.
In regards to UBC Rec, gyms are closed until January 18, which has been effective since December 22, 2021 due to the recent PHO order. This includes closure of fitness centres and dance studios.
The ARC Fitness Centre will be closed until January 18 as well, but this is subject to change, according to their website.
The UBC Aquatic Centre, however, will continue to stay open, but with temporary changes to their operations, such as reduced availability of swimming sessions. Online registration will continue to be required for all aquatic activities with no spectators permitted. These changes are effective starting today, January 10, through March 31.
