After a surprising comeback win against Alberta on the weekend, the UBC women’s soccer team was back in action to face the University of Manitoba Bisons in the Canada West quarterfinal. The ’Birds took care of business decisively, blanking the Bisons by a score of 2-0 to advance to the semifinal of the Canada West Select Six Tournament.
Although the ’Birds were only able to find the back of the net twice, they undoubtedly dominated the game. They outshot the Bisons by an incredible margin of 31-1, forcing Manitoba keeper Madison Wilford to be on top of her game.
Despite an outstanding performance by Wilford, the Bisons were unable to contain UBC’s overwhelming waves of attack. On the offensive end, Manitoba only managed to test goalkeeper Marlee Maracle once, who recorded one of her easiest clean sheets of the season.
Right from the get-go, the ’Birds put pressure on the Manitoba defence and were able to open the scoring in the 15th minute. Jasmin Dhanda was able to break through the Bisons’ defence and score her fourth goal of the playoffs.
That was all the ’Birds needed. They would add an insurance goal in the 42nd minute by Rachel Jones to cap off the dominant performance.
