This weekend, the UBC men’s basketball team played their last two home games for the regular season. The team took both games against their opponent, the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) Timberwolves.
Friday’s game was part of Courtside, the team's final feature event for the year. More than 2,000 fans packed into the War Memorial Gym on a snow-filled evening to watch the ’Birds. The team put on a near record-breaking performance, beating the ’Wolves by a whopping 123-75. There was no lack of noise especially coming from the student section.
UBC forward Conor Morgan showed up, dropping an incredible 36 points in the game. He also recorded two blocks and four steals in his 26 minutes of play time. Taylor Browne also led in scoring with 20 points.
Fifth-year guard Jordan Jensen-Whyte also put on an amazing performance. In one of his final games for the ’Birds, he scored 18 points.
Saturday’s game was no different from Friday’s. While only 565 people braved the snowy conditions, they got to watch the ’Birds hand the Timberwolves another loss.
There may have been less of an atmosphere in the crowd, but there was no lack of electricity on the court. Connor Morgan put down another stellar performance, scoring 20 points in 30 minutes of play. Jordan Jensen-Whyte capped off the ’Birds final homestand with a 24-point performance as he led them to a 109-61 victory.
The Thunderbirds will stay in the Vancouver area next weekend. They will head to Langley to face off against the Trinity Western University (TWU) Spartans.
The ’Birds haven’t played the Spartans yet this year, but TWU just won their first game since November this past weekend against Mount Royal University. UBC shouldn’t have too much to worry about. Still, they should remain focused in the hopes of pulling off another record-breaking performance and maintaining their stellar season record.
