UBC to host 2025 U Sports women's rugby championship

UBC will host the 2025 U Sports women’s rugby championship tournament, according to an October 2 press release

The event will feature Canada's top eight post-secondary teams from October 29 to November 2, 2025. All 11 games will be played at Thunderbird Stadium.

“Vancouver is a hub for major rugby events, and with UBC’s track record of hosting outstanding U SPORTS championships, we know that teams and fans will have an outstanding time in the Lower Mainland come 2025,” said Pierre Arsenault, U Sports chief executive officer.

Athletics and Recreation Managing Director Kavie Toor said UBC is “thrilled” to host the tournament.

“Our UBC women’s rugby program has a strong foundation, having sent many student-athletes to the national team and, most recently, four members of Canada’s Olympic silver medal-winning rugby 7s team in Paris,” he said.

“We look forward to welcoming the best rugby teams from across Canada.”

UBC last hosted the women’s rugby U Sports championships in 2009, where the T-Birds placed seventh. Although women's rugby has never won a national banner, they have claimed the Canada West title for the past four seasons and placed fifth nationally the past three.

Head coach Dean Murten, who has led the program for the past seven years, also expressed excitement for the event.

“Our program has been built on hard work and support from alumni, donors, sponsors and the rugby community around the Lower Mainland,” Murten said.

“This is a great way to show our appreciation to all who have embraced our program by bringing them the best women’s university rugby teams in Canada to their backyard.”
