UBC advances to Heroes of the Dorm championship bracket, and you could win $1 million for guessing the victors

UBC has advanced to Blizzard’s Heroes of the Dorm championship bracket for this year’s rendition of the collegiate eSports tournament. Blizzard is also offering a potential million-dollar grand prize for whoever can predict the perfect bracket.

Heroes of the Dorm, Blizzard’s yearly Heroes of the Storm tournament, features collegiate teams from across North America including UCLA, Notre Dame, the University of Toronto and McGill. Teams have been playing matches for the past month in a round robin format to qualify for the championship bracket.

There was no easy path into this year’s tournament.

“Each team played in a regional group. We had 15 groups — they played four matches within that, and then each of those regional groups had a championship bracket. Throughout the regular series, teams would play a match outside of their regional bracket, or of teams of a similar rank,” said Logan Fishel, associate product manager of College eSports at Blizzard.

UBC’s team — dubbed ElhayM’s Monkeys — are ranked in the number 12 slot in the 64 bracket. In a slight difference from the more traditional March Madness format, Blizzard has chosen for seeding to be done from 1 to 64, meaning first-round match-ups are 1 versus 64, 2 versus 63, 3 versus 62, etc.

UBC will play the University of Ontario Institute of Technology/Durham College team whose 53rd overall ranking, 7-5 match record and 53 per cent overall win record pale in comparison to UBC’s 11-2 match record and 79 per cent win record. The two teams will face off on March 28 in a best-of-three tournament.

If you are feeling lucky — or want a chance at $1 million — Blizzard is also offering a perfect bracket challenge. If you log in with a Blizzard account before March 29, you can enter your choices for who you think will win every single match in the entire bracket. If you guess correctly and guess the final score of the championship match, you could win the grand prize of $1 million.

If you aren’t lucky enough to be perfect, the top remaining bracket will win a measly $10,000. Other prizes for participating include Heroes of the Storm Mounts and other in-game items.

UBC’s games will be covered live on March 28 and 29 on Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm Twitch channel. The full coverage schedule is available here.
