Between the start of classes and at least six sports seasons happening, it can be hard to stay updated on your Thunderbirds. In case you missed them, here are our top 10 varsity moments this month.
10. Jacques scores three tries for men’s rugby
In the first leg of the Wightman Boot, UBC came away with a 44–33 victory, thanks to offensive prowess from Sol Jacques. The fourth-year back row player started off the scoring and kept his team in the game during the first half, when UVic was gaining momentum.
9. Women’s soccer prevails in national championship rematch
In a tense rematch of last year’s U Sports national championship, where the T-Birds won 1–0, UBC women’s soccer delivered a domineering 4–0 win to the Trinity Western University Spartans.
8. Golf teams sweep first tournament
In early September, both men’s and women’s golf teams won the Bushnell Fall Invitational. Aidan Scheumer led the men’s team to victory with a first place individual finish and on the women’s side, Jessica Ng and Grace Bell earned second and third places.
7. Flannery-Fleck earns 14 points in tight win
In Saturday’s tight 32–30 game against the University of Calgary Dinos, football kicker Kieran Flannery-Fleck scored 14 points, including the game-winning field goal to propel the T-Birds to their third consecutive win.
6. Men’s soccer on three game shutout streak
With their 2–0 win over the UBCO Heat, the men’s soccer team earned their third consecutive shutout, thanks to standout performances from goalkeeper Bennet McKay. They extended their winning record to 6–0–2.
5. Tiwana wins Vancouver Spirit Run
Cross-country runner Jaiveer Tiwana finished first among 81 competitors at Jericho Beach’s Vancouver Spirit Run. For his performance, the fourth-year earned Canada West cross-country athlete of the week honours.
4. Women’s rugby dominates with 76–0 win
UBC women’s rugby beat the University of Calgary Dinos in an outstanding 76–0 win. Despite the cold and rainy weather, the team prevailed and scored 12 tries from 6 different T-Birds.
3. Women’s field hockey scores nine goals in home opener weekend
The Thunderbirds dominated against the University of Calgary Dinos, winning 4–0 on September 28 and 5–3 on September 29. Sydney Le scored five of the nine goals, earning CW field hockey player of the week honours.
2. Isaiah Knight’s Homecoming touchdown run
Dodging defenders left and right, Isaiah Knight made a 59-yard run that had the sold-out Homecoming crowd on their feet. The touchdown was the game winner in their 38–24 win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
1. Women’s soccer remains undefeated
With an impressive five game shutout streak, UBC women’s soccer continues to shine. Heading into October, the team holds a record of 8–0 and is the only undefeated team in Canada West.
