UBC will be hosting an NBA skills competition Saturday at the Student Rec Centre. The event will include a three-point shootout and a slam-dunk contest. The winner could find themselves on an all-expense paid trip to the NBA All-Star Game in Toronto on February 14.
Former NBA player and Vancouver Grizzlie Sharif Abdur-Rahim will be at the event, but it isn't clear for how long.
The event is free to enter and the qualifiers start at noon before moving to the War Memorial Gym where the finalists will compete at halftime during the men's basketball game.
“It’s an opportunity to build the profile of basketball on campus and the community at large. We are obviously thrilled that Sharif is coming out and being a part of the experience," said Neeta Soni, the director of marketing, communications, engagement and partnerships at UBC Athletics.
Both the men’s and women’s UBC teams have games on Saturday that will be bolstered by the NBA presence and festivities.
The event is also aimed to promote the CIS Final 8 men's basketball tournament that UBC is hosting in March.
