U Sports hockey national championships cancelled due to COVID-19

Another athletic event will not proceed as both the men's and women's U Sports hockey national championships have been cancelled due to fears surrounding the spread of COVID-19.

The announcement from U Sports came shortly after Hockey Canada announced all sanctioned events would be cancelled until further notice.

The men's team were set to take on the University of New Brunswick Reds in the opening round of the men's tournament in Halifax while the women's tournament was meant to take place on Prince Edward Island.

It was the Thunderbirds' first trip to nationals in 42 years.

The U Sports volleyball nationals will take place this weekend but behind closed doors as no fans will be permitted to enter the arenas.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.

Update 11:30 pm March 12: The U Sports Volleyball championships have also been cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus.
