Want to get your science on?
This week, the UBC Library in collaboration with campus partners is joining universities, libraries, scientific, cultural and community organisations across Canada for a week-long celebration of science.
Founded by Jesse Hildebrand, Science Literacy Week was first held in Toronto in 2014. The aim is to “highlight Canada’s outstanding scientists and science communicators from coast-to-coast,” said Hildebrand.
Ever since Science Literacy Week went nationwide in 2015, the UBC library has been an important part of Hildebrand’s vision for “promoting the public understanding of science” and has hosted events which range from to book displays and documentary screenings.
While Science Literacy Week aims to promote Canadian science, the UBC library uses this opportunity to promote the diverse range of research taking place at both UBC campuses.
This year’s offerings at the Vancouver campus include: Body snatching and the Roots of Anatomy, Why I love science!, Living Libraries, IEEE Author Workshop, and Science Expo. At the Okanagan campus, you can find Science in Writing, I love science because… and Show me Something I’ve Never Seen Before.
All of these events are free.
While some of these events will be taking place throughout the week, there are some one day events. If you are interested in learning about the many activities taking place at UBC, check out the UBC Library’s website for a complete list of events and information on registering.
