Last words: Football banners are a step in the right direction

I, for one, welcome our new football overlords[/ub_subhead

A couple weeks ago, students entering the new Student Union Building were greeted by enormous banners hanging over the atrium. Featuring the busts of two Thunderbird football players and a schedule of games, the banners are out of sorts with what a school with anemic athletic attendance and no surplus of school spirit might expect.

But perhaps they’re exactly what we need.

Homecoming attendance last weekend neared 7,000 -- the highest in recent memory -- and students seemed to have had a genuinely good time. While marketing and branding won’t solve the lack of school spirit alone, it is likewise hard to expect students to support university sports if there’s no visible hint that Point Grey is in fact home to some of Canada’s top athletic programs.

Of course, the word on the street is that athletics may not have even thought of the banners on their own -- who paid for them is an open question -- but the important thing is that they’re there. Now, UBC just has to get its team branding in order (memo to the bookstore: figure out what UBC’s school colours are and consistently design apparel accordingly -- no more maroon and purple hoodies please).
