Every few weeks, your elected student government meets on a Wednesday night to talk about issues concerning the AMS. Agenda items can seem long, mysterious and confusing without the proper background, making it difficult to see how these issues affect students. Here’s what to watch out for in the upcoming AMS Council meeting on June 28:
2017/2018 Budget
At its May 17 meeting, AMS Council heard from the VP Finance about the draft budget for the 2017/2018 year. At this meeting, the Associate VP Finance will be presenting the final version of the budget. Council will then vote to consider its approval.
Notable changes to the budget from last year include significant increases to the President and VP Finance’s office budgets, and a $20,000 net increase to Block Party for next April’s event.
A Slurry of Code Changes
Council will be entertaining a series of changes the Code of Procedures — one of the AMS’s governing documents — at this meeting. Highlights include the permanent prohibition of candidates endorsing one another in AMS elections, as well as changes to the non-voting positions on Council. There is also a proposal to reinstate old Code language regulating the ability of constituencies to run budget deficits, a direct result of the committee formulated several months ago to look into AMS-constituency relations.
AMS Academic Experience Survey Results
Each spring, the AMS offers its members a survey to gauge their satisfaction with UBC, AMS services and more. The results of the most recent version of the survey — which for the first time included graduate students — are now available and will be presented by the VP Academic and University Affairs during this meeting of Council. Noteworthy results include 69 per cent of students reporting satisfaction with their UBC experience and 28 per cent saying tuition fees represent good value, from a total of almost 2,500 student responses.
