Every few weeks, your elected student government meets on a Wednesday night to talk about issues concerning the AMS. Agenda items can seem long, mysterious and confusing without the proper background, making it difficult to see how these issues affect students. Here’s what to watch out for in the upcoming AMS Council meeting on April 25th.
Sustainability
More than ten years after the adoption of the Lighter Footprint Strategy, Council will be considering the adoption of the Student-Driven Sustainability Strategy. The new document builds upon the earlier strategy, and covers the areas of food and beverages, building operations, administrative operations, transportation, communication, partnerships, social sustainability and wellbeing, finance and transparency as well as biodiversity and climate.
VP Academic office restructuring
For the second year in a row, the VP Academic office will be seeing major changes in its structure. Proposed in the new format is the creation of two associate vice president positions — one to handle academic affairs and the other to assist with all other university matters. There is a net increase of ten hours in staffing support each week as a result of these changes.
Updated Nest expulsion policy
After feedback received following the approval of the original policy in February, Council will be considering the adoption of a revised Nest expulsion policy on the recommendation of the nominating committee. The policy, in its revised format, now lists upholding the AMS’s mission statement as its primary objective.
Jakob Gattinger, a fourth year applied science student, is the former VP Academic and University Affairs pro tem for the AMS and a current member of Council for engineering, as well as a student senator.
