The self-checkout micro-market Avenue C in the Walter Gage residence commonsblock is experiencing an unsustainable amount of theft, UBC Housing says.
In 2021, in partnership with UBC Food Services, Canteen Canada opened Avenue C, Vancouver's first self-checkout micro-market, in the commonsblock of the Walter Gage student residence.
UBC Student Housing and Community Services notified students living in Walter Gage, Brock Commons, Exchange, and tə šxʷhəleləm̓s tə k̓ʷaƛ̓kʷəʔaʔɬ residences of the thefts in an email sent on October 20.
According to the email, UBC Food Services and Campus Security are currently reviewing Avenue C Market’s video surveillance, and trying to improve the entrance gates and surveillance system at the market.
“Our goal is to keep Avenue C Market open for our community, however, if we are not able to stop these thefts, we unfortunately will be forced to close this service permanently,” the email read.
In a statement sent to The Ubyssey, Colin Moore, director of Food Services, confirmed the thefts at Avenue C, but did not say what or how many items have been taken for security reasons.
Moore also reiterated that if theft levels are not reduced, UBC will “need to close the market.”
In its email to students, SHCS asked students who witnessed any “suspicious behavior” to call Campus Security 604.822.2222 or make an online incident report.
