VP administration candidate Jake Sawatzky has been suspended from campaigning for 24 hours.
According to a statement from the Elections Committee sent to The Ubyssey, a member of Sawatzky’s campaign used the campaign’s Instagram account to make a comment endorsing another AMS executive candidate.
In a statement sent to The Ubyssey, Sawatzky said although he didn’t make the comment, he takes responsibility for not clarifying the election rules for the volunteer who accessed his account.
“Although this is a setback, I will be using this next 24 hours to study for some midterms, while resting with my team. We look forward to starting to campaign again at full force, tomorrow,” he added.
The committee “unanimously determined that this constitutes ‘slate-like behavior’ and ‘endorsing another candidate,'" according to the statement. The suspension begins Friday, March 3 at 5 p.m. and ends Saturday, March 4 at 5 p.m.
The candidate who Sawatzky's campaign endorsed was not suspended. The Elections Committee did not provide the other candidate’s name.
“After reaching out to the other candidate involved in this matter, it is clear that they did not partake in the campaign violation and immediately deleted the comment when they were aware of the matter,” the Committee wrote.
