Richard Watson, Murray McCutcheon, Bill Holmes, Eagle Glassheim, Zheng (Jane) Kang, Mario Gallo and Ali Mojdehi are the new elected members of the University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA) Board of Directors.
Watson, Holmes, Kang and McCutcheon have been re-elected for another three years, while Glassheim, Gallo and Mojdehi are joining the Board for the first time.
Thirteen candidates ran for seven positions on the UNA Board. Voting opened on November 8 and ran until yesterday.
In his campaign, Watson emphasized the need to enhance connection, communication and programs in the neighbourhood. Holmes emphasized his background as a tax lawyer in campaigning, while Kang focused on traffic and safety. McCutcheon stressed his experience.
Gallo, a professor of teaching in kinesiology, emphasized the need for a balance of safe green spaces and commercial real estate in her campaign. Glassheim, a professor of history, stressed his connection and involvement in the community. Mojdehi, the acting director of UBC Campus Security spoke to the need for growth in the UNA.
UNA bylaws state that a maximum of three candidates from a single residential area such as Wesbrook Place or Hawthorn Place can be elected. That’s why Fei Liu and Tony Cheng were not elected, despite getting more votes than Mojdehi, who was elected.
Watson, the current chair of the Board, received the most votes with 825 cast for him.
No students were successful in getting elected to the Board, despite four running. The AMS budgeted an additional $7,400 to campaign for the student candidates — although the money came from a budget surplus in the VP external’s office.
The UNA has one non-voting student seat, filled by the VP external of the AMS. Students have no voting representation on the Board.
The winners will begin their terms on December 14.
