UBCO evacuated due to wildfires

The UBC Okanagan campus was ordered to evacuate due to wildfires at 1 p.m. today.

Fires in the Clifton/McKinley areas surrounding UBCO’s campus prompted the an evacuation order.

On August 17, a state of emergency was declared in Kelowna and evacuation orders have continued to expand to more neighbourhoods.

A tweet shared on UBC Okanagan’s social media stated that free transportation is being provided to people stuck on campus located at the H Lot.

Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Deborah Buszard and UBCO Deputy Vice-Chancellor Lesley Cormack released astatement on the situation today.

"These are unquestionably challenging and unsettling times for our students, faculty and staff and residents of Kelowna and surrounding communities. We urge everyone to follow the direction of first responders and wildfire personnel and stay safe," they wrote.

People evacuated are advised to register online with Emergency Support Services, on whether or not they access services at an evacuation centre.
