On July 3, UBC President Benoit-Antoine Bacon announced in a broadcast message that the university is “refreshing” its strategic plan.
“As UBC passes the halfway point on its strategic plan, Shaping UBC’s Next Century, the time is right for us to revisit it and define the university’s priorities for the next three to five years,” wrote Bacon.
UBC’s 10-year strategic plan was passed in 2018, outlining the university's “collective vision, purpose, goals and strategies for the years ahead,” according to the plan.
Bacon said UBC has made “great strides in advancing all aspects of the plan,” but the last five years have seen “substantial change in the world, including a global pandemic, increased geo-political tensions, and the rise of AI.”
Bacon said the intention for refreshing the strategic plan — which will be in place until 2028 — is not to replace the current plan, but “to define a series of priorities and actions for the next three to five years, largely focused on UBC’s academic and research goals.”
“By revisiting and refreshing our strategic plan, we can celebrate and build upon our successes, apply lessons learned, adapt to a changing higher education and research landscape, and continue our trajectory of transformation, propelling UBC to even greater heights,” according to UBC’s website.
Bacon said the objectives of the refresh will be to define shorter-term priorities regarding academics and research and continue plans such as UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan and Strategic Equity and Anti-Racism Framework.
Bacon wrote UBC aims to refresh the plan by the end of the 2024/25 academic year.
At a September 25 UBC Board of Governors meeting, Bacon said he is “very excited” about the refresh.
“This is a chance that we have to re-energize our community towards defining the next steps for UBC,” said Bacon.
The university said community consultation will begin this fall.
