UBC has a low daily case rate and an impossibly high vaccination rate, as per the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control’s (BCCDC) latest update to its surveillance dashboard.
From September 21 to 27, the UBC neighbourhood saw an average of three daily cases per 100,000 residents. The test positivity is now at less than one per cent, the lowest in the Lower Mainland. This data does not include commuter students.
Both of these data points have remained stable from last week’s update.
The first-dose vaccination rate for residents ages 12+ in the UBC neighbourhood has reached 100 per cent — up from 96 per cent last week. However, it’s likely this data point is not accurate. Breaking down UBC residents by age, 93 per cent of residents 12–17 have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, 100 per cent of residents 18–49 have received their first dose and 85 per cent of 50+ residents have received their first dose.
The Ubyssey is awaiting a response from the BCCDC on the accuracy of these 100 per cent figures.
The BCCDC recently went back on a Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) claim that 99 per cent of adults under 30 were vaccinated.
After scrutiny from CBC reporter Justin McElroy, the BCCDC added a note to one of its graphics saying that university students who moved to Vancouver recently and got a shot in VCH increased the percentage.
Second dose coverage for residents 12+ has risen by three per cent to 86 per cent.
According to UBC President Santa Ono, 73,779 UBC community members have filled out the university’s vaccine declaration form. 94.78 per cent declared they are fully vaccinated and 3.06 per cent declared they are partially vaccinated — leaving 2.16 per cent of respondents reporting that they are unvaccinated or choosing not to disclose.
Rapid testing sites are now open on both campuses, but some said they were having trouble booking appointments earlier today.
