More than a full year after a woman burned down the campus rainbow flag, the UBC Pride Collective has raised it again outside the Old SUB.
The ceremony marked the beginning of Pride Week, a “week-long celebration of queer and trans identities,” according to Pride member Emily Lim.
The Collective will host a slew of events between March 3–11, including an academic conference called “Queer U,” a “Social Justice 101” workshop, a performance night and a dance to cap off the week. The full schedule can be found on Pride’s Facebook page.
In light of last year’s events, the flag raising holds special significance to some members of Pride.
“[The flag] is a pretty big symbol of resistance and community. We don't want to give up. We're not crawling into a hole, we’re not going away. We're still here, we’re still queer,” said Lim.
