Electrical shutdown in Ponderosa scheduled for Saturday, February 13

Electricity in Ponderosa Commons will be shut down on February 13, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

An email sent to residents outlined that the shutdown is “required by UBC Energy and Water Services to perform important time-sensitive maintenance work” on the high-voltage substation.

Matthew Ramsey, director of university affairs at UBC Media Relations, said that this shutdown would only impact the three buildings in Ponderosa, calling the servicing “routine.”

“The three [buildings] will be affected by the routine servicing of the complex system. No other building will be affected,” he wrote in a follow-up statement.

During the blackout, hot water, elevators, stoves, electrical appliances and laundry machines will not be operational, the email said. Mercante and Harvest will also both be affected. The email notes that life safety systems will continue to operate and advises residents to unplug all computers before the shutdown begins.

As elevators will be down, Lyndon Duncan, residence life manager at Ponderosa Commons, noted in the email that an alternate entrance will be available through the Audain Art Centre.

“We do appreciate that this will have an impact on you. I am hopeful that providing this notice will enable you to make suitable plans for this shutdown,” Duncan wrote.
