A person causing a disturbance at Totem Park was arrested by campus RCMP yesterday afternoon.
“Thanks to some quick reporting, the RCMP attended and they apprehended a suspect,” said Cate Morrison, assistant director of Residence Life, in an email to The Ubyssey.
According to a post on Reddit, he was following female students into Nootka House armed with a switchblade. The RCMP were unable to either confirm or deny this.
Sgt. Drew Grainger of the UBC RCMP detachment confirmed that they arrested a person causing a disturbance.
“He was breaching court-ordered conditions and was arrested for that,” Grainger told The Ubyssey.
Residence Life sent an email to the residents of Totem Park to inform them of the incident. The email reminded residents of emergency numbers and contacts as well as promoted security procedures such as locking windows and doors while sleeping or away from the room.
“For any crime, it is never the fault of the victim,” Morrison said. “We recognize these are preventative measures that will not stop every crime from happening. However, we can work together proactively to create a safer community in residence.”
