Visitors to the Nest will be required to wear masks starting September 14, the AMS announced today in an email.
The announcement advertised the requirement that students must wear “a mask or suitable face covering” in the building. It accompanies an Instagram story posted on the same day.
“You may be asked to leave the building if you are not wearing a mask,” the AMS wrote in an Instagram story.
The society’s announcement comes after UBC said it would not mandate mask usage this fall.
Evans said the AMS has been having discussions with the university and is pushing for the university to have safe conditions for students.
“We know that the university has a supply of masks for students, but there hasn’t been a lot of good communication about how to access it,” Evans said.
The Nest reopened on May 20 after closing in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The AMS implemented safety protocols including decreased seating and restricted stair usage.
“At the AMS, student safety is always our top concern,” said AMS President Cole Evans.
“And given what’s happening in the provinces with rising cases … it’s a no-brainer for us to be implementing the mandatory masks policy for the Nest.”
