Man charged with second-degree murder after homicide near UBC campus

This story contains mention of intimate partner violence.

The RCMP laid charges against Yang "Christopher" Liang following a homicide investigation after the death of a female in the 5400-block of Shortcut Road in the University Endowment Lands.

According to investigators, since the parties were known to each other they believe this “may have been a tragic incident of intimate partner violence.”

The charge against Liang was laid Thursday, wrote Corporal Esther Tupper in a press release by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

“IHIT is appreciative of the unwavering support from our partners, specifically the Integrated Emergency Response Team and the Vancouver Police Department, which allowed IHIT to locate and arrest the accused,” read the press release.

On March 14, IHIT announced it was investigating a possible homicide on the University Endowment Lands. The release said the University RCMP detachment responded to a call of a female in medical distress, who was found deceased on the scene, around 11:42 p.m. the night before.

According to the March 14 release, both a man and a woman were arrested on scene in relation to the murder.

IHIT encouraged victims of intimate partner violence and those around them to reach out to their local police and resources such as VictimLinkBC — a toll-free, confidential, multilingual service available across BC and Yukon 24/7 by phone at 1-800-563-0808 or by email at VictimLinkBC@bc211.ca.
