Judy Rogers will be UBC’s 20th chancellor starting September 1.
Rogers succeeds Steven Point, UBC’s first Indigenous chancellor who stepped down after four years in the position. As chancellor, Rogers will preside over convocation and represent the university at a variety of events.
Rogers is UBC’s third woman chancellor and a UBC alum. She holds a bachelor of recreation education from UBC, a master’s degree in public administration from UVic and an honorary doctorate from Capilano University.
“Judy Rogers brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished track record of service to UBC,” said UBC Board of Governors’ interim chair Bill Sundhu in a UBC Broadcast message. “Her extensive background in governance, public administration and community development will be invaluable to the university as we continue to advance our mission.”
Rogers was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2017 as “a leader in municipal government innovation,” having served as the City of Vancouver’s city manager from 1999–2008 and played a key role in Vancouver’s hosting of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Rogers has also won two UN public service awards for her work with the Downtown Eastside Community Development Project.
“I am incredibly honoured to become UBC’s next Chancellor,” said Rogers in an interview with UBC Media Relations.
“My connection to UBC has always been strong, and I look forward to working alongside students, faculty, academic leaders, alumni and the broader community to help advance the university’s vision.”
