Go Global cancels first term and full-year exchanges

Go Global has cancelled all first term and full-year exchanges for the upcoming school year.

In an email sent to students on June 1, UBC announced that all university travel for students in fall 2020 has been cancelled, including the exchange programs.

“This decision was made in consideration of the current advice of the BC CDC and Global Affairs Canada, of students’ safety and the practical difficulties of international travel under the current global circumstances,” the email reads.

Students have two options: to withdraw from exchange completely or request to change their exchange from term one or full year to term two only.

In the case that students withdraw, they will get their $415 Go Global fee credited back to their tuition account. If they want to request to change their exchange to term two, the email states that Go Global cannot guarantee students a spot “due to possible space limitations at our partner schools,” and those who are set to graduate in May 2021 will not be able to if they choose to go on exchange in second term.

The email also notes that students are not able to defer their exchange to the 2021/22 academic year.

“We know that this is disappointing news. You have worked hard to prepare for your exchange, and we share your disappointment. We sincerely hope that there will be an opportunity for you to participate in a Go Global program in the future,” the email states.
