Firefighters say a brush fire that broke out at Wreck Beach tonight is under control.
According to Battalion Chief Bob Hollier, the fire grew to approximately 100 by 200 feet in area at its largest size, around 200 feet into the forest near University Boulevard. Hollier said firefighters had to climb 70 feet down an embankment into heavily bushed area to put out the fire.
“It was quite difficult to access ... but at this time, it hasn’t been too much of a challenge,” said Hollier.
Several fire trucks and more than 20 firefighters responded to the scene.
"The forests are very dry right now, and we didn’t want to get this out of control,” said Hollier. "So we had a large response, a lot of water. We were able to get on it quickly."
As of 10:30 p.m., Hollier said the fire was under control, though the area would remain under watch. Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire, but Hollier said he expects it was human caused.
