David Eby announces NDP leadership bid

David Eby is running to be the next BC NDP leader and premier of BC.

Eby — the MLA for the Vancouver-Point Grey electoral district which includes UBC — announced his candidacy at an event in Kitsilano Tuesday evening.

He thanked his supporters for their encouragement to run for the leadership.

“It is because of all of you and your confidence in me that I will be putting my name forward …  as the next leader for the BC NDP,” he said.

The bid comes three weeks after Premier John Horgan announced that he would step down as NDP leader, but remain in the role until a new leader was selected.

The race for leadership is currently uncontested. Several high-profile ministers have stated they will not run, and Ministers Ravi Kahlon and Bowinn Ma have publicly endorsed Eby.

Eby has represented the Vancouver-Point Grey electoral district since 2013. He is currently BC’s Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing.

NDP party members will vote in November, with results expected by December 3. To vote in the leadership race, individuals must become party members by September 4.
