COVID-19 remains low at UBC as the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) reports an average of three daily cases per 100,000 residents at UBC last week.
From October 12 to October 18, the UBC neighbourhood had a test positivity rate below one per cent, and its daily case rate only went up by one case per 100,000 per day.
This continues a promising trend of low COVID-19 case counts for people living in the UBC neighbourhood — which includes the endowment lands. Since school began in early September, cases only spiked once — to 13 daily cases per 100,000 residents between September 7 and September 13. Since that date, cases have only slightly fluctuated from two to four daily cases per 100,000 residents on average.
While this data does not include commuters, it still indicates a low rate of transmission occurring on UBC campus. Vancouver Coastal Health told The Ubyssey for an October 5 article that there have been no cases of in-class transmission on UBC campus since the beginning of classes.
While the specific numbers for vaccination rates remain slightly in question due to the BCCDC’s incorrect denominator, the BCCDC reported that 96 per cent of people aged 12+ in the UBC neighbourhood have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Ninety-three per cent of people in the same age group were reported to have received their second dose as well.
These numbers remained unchanged from last week.
As for the university’s vaccine information on the UBC community, including UBC Okanagan students, UBC Media Relations told The Ubyssey on October 18 that 94.9 per cent of total students, faculty and staff on both campuses have completed their vaccine status declarations.
Media Relations stated that 95.8 per cent reported full vaccination and 2.1 per cent reported partial vaccination — meaning 2.1 per cent either reported they are not vaccinated or chose not to disclose. However, the process to verify these numbers has only just begun.
