Today the Board of Governors announced that President Arvind Gupta will resign his position.
Gupta was named the 13th UBC President and Vice-Chancellor on March 12, 2014. Gupta has a PhD in computer science, and, according to a press release, he will return to UBC’s department of computer science.
“I want to take this time to thank Dr. Gupta for his service to the university community over the past year and acknowledge his hard work, integrity, and dedication,” said UBC Board of Governors’ Chair John Montalbano in a press release.
Martha Piper, UBC president from 1997-2006, will serve as interim president while a search for a new president is conducted.
Montalbano told The Ubyssey he is confident the university will be in good hands with Piper.
"We’re going to get things done. Martha [Piper]'s a very strong leader, very familiar with the university and she will not be afraid to make the key decisions that are required with her team," said Montalbano.
Montalbano wouldn't comment on how much notice the Board had of Gupta's resignation, though said it left enough time to find an interim president.
