COVID-19 at UBC: Cases in slight decline on campus amid provincial spike

COVID-19 cases are decreasing once again at UBC after a brief spike last week.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), the UBC neighbourhood had a daily case rate of six new cases per 100,000 residents between July 30 and August 5, a decrease from 19 in the previous update and 13 in the update before that.

The testing positivity rate fell back down to one per cent, having been at three per cent the previous week.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 vaccine coverage continued to increase, with first dose coverage having reached 81 per cent among UBC residents aged 18+ and full vaccination at 62 per cent among the same demographic.

While cases remain higher than in the past few weeks, the Lower Mainland has so far been spared the worst of COVID-19’s fourth wave, with most of the cases concentrated in the B.C. Interior health region.

The province saw 464 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday.
