An advisory committee will be considering VP Academic and Provost Andrew Szeri for reappointment after his term ends on June 30 later this year.
Szeri formally began his term on July 10, 2017, replacing Dr. Angela Redish, who had served as Provost and VP Academic pro tem since July 2015.
In his role as provost and VP academic, Szeri oversees UBC’s academic strategy, budgeting and planning processes, along with UBC’s academic programs, enrolment faculty affairs.
In accordance with Policy AP6 — the policy on the extension of appointments for senior academic administrators — when an executive indicates interest in reappointment, an advisory committee is formed to advise the President and the Board of Governors on whether that executive should be reappointed, and what the terms of that extension should be.
On January 20, the UBC Vancouver Senate approved the appointment of three senators to the advisory committee: Mary MacDougall, dean of dentistry, Dr. Susan Forwell, a professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Julia Burnham, a student senator and grad student.
The advisory committee, presided over by President Santa Ono, also includes Board of Governors members Sandra Cawley and Mark Mac Lean, Vice-Provost and Associate VP, Enrolment and Academic Facilities Pam Ratner, AMS VP Academic and University Affairs Georgia Yee, Allard PhD student Oludolapo Makinde and a non-voting secretary.
According to Policy AP6, the committee will take into consideration a report of accomplishments and challenges from the incumbent to review.
“The Advisory Committee will issue a public call for comments from the University community and consult with a broad range of the incumbent’s constituents, including: direct reports, peers, immediate colleagues, relevant members of the University Executive Committee, external organizations with whom the incumbent would normally interact, and the broader community,” the policy reads.
In a broadcast email sent out on February 1, Ono invited community members to email the President’s Office with any feedback on Szeri by February 19.
