Both AMS VP Finance Gavin Fung-Quon and VP External Ayesha Irfan Gavin resigned from their positions effective immediately as of 6 p.m. and 6:07 p.m. respectively, on February 5.
Fung-Quon and Irfan are the second and third executives to depart from the AMS this academic year. Former VP Academic and University Affairs Drédyn Fontana was removed from office by AMS Council on November 6 due to performance concerns including non-confidence to complete his goals and “misrepresentation to Council.” The AMS has not specified what misrepresentation to Council means.
Since November 8, Fung-Quon was on a leave of absence for "personal reasons," from which he did not return from prior to his resignation.
Fung-Quon wrote in his resignation letter also obtained by The Ubyssey that he appreciated the opportunity to support students and hopes that "in the future, the [AMS] workplace culture and care for workers are respected and improved in the process of supporting the members of our student union."
In her resignation letter obtained by The Ubyssey, Irfan, who went on a leave of absence in December 2024, said "Serving students ... has been one of the most fulfilling highlights of my university experience."
Irfan also wrote that before her, five elected AMS executive team members have left the student society over the last two terms.
"I encourage the AMS Council to think about the environment that is currently being created and how this hinders retention and success amongst the student union executive team," wrote Irfan.
Both Fung-Quon and Irfan mentioned AMS bylaw 5(3)(c)(ii) in their resignation letters. This bylaw mandates AMS Council to hold a by-election to fill vacancies when executive members resign or are removed not sooner than 21, but not later than 31 days from the vacancy.
During the February 5 AMS Council meeting, Council voted on a motion to accept Fung-Quon and Irfan's resignation and to move the AMS General Election dates from February 28–March 7 to March 7–14 to align with what the by-election dates would be. Council also voted to add an extra week to the nomination period.
The AMS did not respond for The Ubyssey's request for comment by press time, but its comment will be included in updates to this article.
