AMS managing director leaves society: AMS president

Keith Hester, the AMS’s managing director, has left his position to “pursue other ventures,” AMS President Eshana Bhangu announced Thursday afternoon.

Hester was the most senior permanent staff member at the AMS. He oversaw its businesses, events, communications and financial and administrative affairs.

In a statement sent to The Ubyssey via email, Bhangu said Hester left his position on November 3.

“[Hester] played a vital role in advising and assisting the student leadership in executing many of our goals for the student membership over the past several years,” Bhangu wrote.

Hester has been working at the AMS for 11 years. He was the director of finance until 2016, when the AMS's general manager left the society. Hester then became the interim general manager, and then the managing director — a new role the society created after a 2016 governance review.

Celia Chung, the current human resources manager, has been appointed interim managing director effective immediately, according to Bhangu.

Bhangu said the AMS will announce next steps about the hiring of a permanent managing director in the coming weeks.

In her email to The Ubyssey, Bhangu said she could not comment further on Hester’s departure due to privacy and employment laws.

“I have greatly valued [Hester’s] support, collegiality, and vibrancy around the AMS Offices. We will miss [Hester] dearly and wish him the very best in his future ventures,” Bhangu wrote in her statement.
