Three of four AMS-proposed referenda passed

The fee increase stood as the only AMS-proposed referendum that did not pass at this year's AMS Election.

To pass, a referendum must get a majority of ‘yes’ votes and 8 per cent of the student body must vote ‘yes.’ Voter turnout for elections as a whole this year was 10,468 votes — 17.4 per cent of the student body.

The first referendum that passed was the creation of the VP Student Life, which creates a sixth AMS executive position. This passed with 86.7 per cent of the vote, with 7,304 voting in favour.

The second referendum that passed was the constituency creation, with 89.3 per cent of the vote and 6,543 votes in favour.

The budget deadline extension passed with the most number of ‘yes’ votes. It passed with 90.5 per cent of the vote and 7,137 voting in favour.

The only AMS referendum that did not pass was the fee increase, which proposed an increase of AMS student fees by $4.95 and indexing the Athletics and Intramural Benefit fee to the BC consumer price index.

This referendum failed, with 53.4 per cent of the vote, 4745 voting ‘no.’

The results regarding the Voting for the student-petitioned referendum for the AMS to support a two-day student strike for Palestine will end on March 17 at 8 p.m. The result for this item will be announced on the AMS website.

A previous version of this article misstated the release date of the results of the student strike referendum. The Ubyssey regrets this error.
