RCMP asks potential victims to come forward following voyeur incident

University RCMP are asking potential victims to come forward after voyeur took photos of a victim in a bathroom stall last Thursday.

Around 10 p.m. on January 3, a voyeur took photos of a victim in a bathroom stall in a building on the 6300 block of Agronomy Road.

RCMP were delayed in their response, but were able to apprehend a suspect who was charged with obstruction and then released.

They do not believe the incident to be related to a previously reported voyeur incident in September.

Law enforcement said the unspecified delay was because UBC Campus Security were contacted before them, and cautioned victims to always call 911 first.

“If you call Campus Security and then they call us, there’s a delay there ... One that could have been alleviated if the victim had called 911 in the first instance.” said RCMP sergeant Janelle Shoihet.

“Like the RCMP, we encourage all members of the UBC community to contact police immediately if they see a crime in progress, have knowledge of crime that’s occurred, or are concerned about their or the community’s safety.” wrote UBC media relations senior director Kurt Heinrich in a written statement.

A criminal investigation is ongoing. RCMP is now asking any potential victims to contact them at 604-224-1322.
