The Irving K. Barber Library (IKB) is closed for the remainder of the day due to a water leak in the basement.
The Ubyssey confirmed that around 12 p.m. today a heating water return pipe ruptured, which resulted in a flood in IKB's basement classroom and office areas.
UBC Building Operations (Building Ops) crews were made aware of the flooding and have been working to repair the pipe.
Building Ops also decided to close the library in order to drain the entire system and start the drying process. According to a statement from UBC Library, no library materials were damaged during the water leak.
In an emailed statement to The Ubyssey, a UBC spokesperson confirmed that some drywall and carpeting were damaged during the water leak and will need repairing.
UBC Library noted in their written statement that rooms 155, 156, 157, 158, 185, 192, 193 and 194, as well as lecture theatre 182, will be closed from January 9 to 12. But the lecture room lobby floor and room 191 will require repair work past January 12.
Building Ops expects that IKB will reopen at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.
