UBC student reunited with beloved gecko after lost on airplane

Enough with the dog-lovers and crazy cat ladies, there's a new pet in town that seems to make owners very happy — the gecko.

UBC student Meryl Bishop had her gecko taken away from her while boarding a plane from Ottawa to Vancouver last week. WestJet airplanes only carry dogs, cats, birds and rabbits in-cabin, so Bishop was forced to send her gecko, Nom Chompsky, in with the cargo.

Chompsky proved to be a resilient little animal and managed to survive without food or water for three days when he was left aboard the airplane by mistake. In an interview with CBC, Bishop criticized WestJet's animal allowance policy: “Something needs to change so no one else has to go through the heartbreak I went through.” Bishop appears to have made quite the impact as a WestJet spokesperson announced they would be looking into changing their policies and put on a nationwide search — for a gecko!

Bishop and Chompsky seemed to be in great spirits when they were reunited and CBC captured a photo of Bishop staring lovingly down at Chompsky. As a fellow pet lover, good on you, Meryl Bishop. I applaud your dedication to changing WestJet's policies and the love you have for Nom Chompsky.

Also, bonus points for his name.
