Blast off with UBC Rockets open house on Thursday

If you’re interested in the final frontier and all the technology it takes to get there, then head to the Engineering Student Centre this Thursday, April 26, where the UBC Rocket club will be holding its first-ever open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The main feature of the event is definitely the club’s award-winning rocket from last year’s Spaceport America Cup, Cypress, which helped bring the team to win the 10,000 feet “commercial off the shelf” category.

New projects, such as the club’s new 30K rocket destined to compete in this year’s Spaceport America Cup, as well as Cypress (the team’s first reused rocket) will be on display for viewing and club members may even conduct some live demonstrations of the equipment. If you spent your childhood making pop-bottle rockets, you’ll be in for a treat to see these student-engineered rockets at work.

Stop by for five minutes or an hour and chat with club members about astrophysics or the science behind Star Trek. It’s sure to be a blast either way.
