Prepare for “The Big One” with ShakeOut BC: Drop! Cover! Hold on!

After this weekend’s storm scare, UBC is taking extra precautions in preparing students for an on-campus emergency situation.

It’s no secret that British Columbia — as well as the rest of the West Coast — is expecting “The Big One” at any time from tomorrow to 50 years from now. “The Big One” refers to an earthquake and the city of Vancouver is preparing for damages to bridges, buildings and homes.

Most of you reading this probably spend a decent chunk of your time on the UBC campus and it’s vital for your safety to know what to do in case of an earthquake while in class or in the library.

On Wednesday, October 19, Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness Naomi Yamamoto will be coming to UBC to cover the ShakeOut Drill. The football team, coaches and mascot will all be in attendance to assist and teach the appropriate techniques.

The event will be held in Thunderbird Stadium at 9:30 a.m. and it is asked that you check-in at the west side stadium entrance, next to UBC's Football Academic Centre.

This event is truly a great resource UBC is providing for free, so take full advantage even if you have to come to campus early or run over to the stadium in between classes.
