Math professor publishes detailed registration guide for course selection

UBC mathematics professor Mark Mac Lean posted a list of tips and pointers for students registering in first-year math classes on the UBC subreddit yesterday.

Mac Lean’s post covered a lot of ground. He first advised students to check their eligibility to take first-year math classes on the UBC math department’s website and then explained “that there is a bit of play in the 80% PREC 12 grade requirement,” with 78 per cent typically considered “good enough” to take the class.

Some other topics that he discussed were the limited enrollment room of MATH 110, registration guarantees, the difficulties of trying to find a spot in full classes and who students should contact in case they have any questions.

Most notably, he hit the caps lock button to tell students “DO NOT REGISTER IN MULTIPLE VERSIONS OF CA1 COURSES,” warning them that they will be removed from all but one of these courses if they do this.

Afterwards, he posted a shorter list for upper-year students who had questions about when certain courses would be offered and prerequisite grades. Basically, Mac Lean is the person we all need when course registration dates are released. To all other departments: take note.

Mac Lean is very active on the UBC subreddit — he answers plenty of questions that students ask throughout the site and has previously discussed registration issues pertaining to math classes. He is responding to students’ questions in the comment section, so ask him any additional questions there.

In the words of one user in the comments section, he is “definitely the nerdy dad of r/UBC.”
