How not to be so lonely: a guide

We’ve all been there. Whether you’re a nervous freshman or a tired senior, it can be a difficult task to make friends. But the good news is that you’re at university! No other place in the world can offer such a diverse group of peers that you can befriend. Still, taking the first step can be difficult. So that’s where this handy list of tips comes in, hopefully giving you some more options and ideas on how to find your squad.

Join a club

It’s been said over and over again, but joining a club will be the best way to meet people who share the same interest as you. UBC offers hundreds of diverse clubs — there’s something here for just about everyone.

Use an app

Nowadays, a quick search in the app store will reveal a ton of friend-making, people-connecting apps. A great new one is Pokémon Go — I’m sure you’ve heard of it. Set off a lure and watch the people come! And uh… People still use Tinder to make friends, right?

Keep your door open

Are you living on the campus? If yes, then try leaving your door open or ask some of your fellow floormates out for dinner. Chances are that they’re just like you — freshly moved in and looking for some friends too!

Commuter buddy!

For the students doing the long commute, try finding someone who has the same route as you! Maybe strike up a conversation with someone you’ve seen a couple times on the bus or try sitting next to them. Another option for commuters is Collegia, which opens up a space for commuters to chill and study in between classes.

Just say, “Hi”

Sometimes the hardest but the most effective thing you can do is just saying, “hi.” Introduce yourself to someone sitting next to you in class or in the library. You never know how long a little bravery will take you. Just give it a shot!
