As a part of the series of events happening for this year's Pride Week, the UBC Pride Collective is hosting the Prideweek Performance Night tonight where LBGTQ+ individuals can present their poetry or art at the event’s open mic.
According to their Facebook event page, the night will be “a space for those in the LGBTQ+ community who want share their thoughts and to let voices of our community be heard.” It will also have “a focus on intersectionality.”
The event has two featured poets — one of them is current Vanslam youth champion Santiago Ureña, who has a penchant for quirky neckties, thrift store mugs, eating cereal with warm milk, Carly Rae Jepsen and pineapple pizza. They like to write about “their experiences, love, their strange infatuation with meteorological phenomena” and “a possible lack of clean underwear.”
The other spoken word poet is Coral More, who was a member of the Vancouver Poetry Slam team for two years and has performed at numerous poetry slams. Her poetry discusses themes such as mental illness, sexuality and feminism.
The event takes place in the Michael Kingsmill Forum in the Nest from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
