Want to try something new this summer and have some free time that you’d like to fill in? If yes, then you can try getting involved with some clubs and communities around campus that are keeping themselves active over the summer. Whether they’re throwing one-off events or getting together every week, these groups are organizing activities this summer that just might capture your interest.
Garden on the roof of the Nest with Roots on the Roof
Did you know that there’s a garden on the roof of the Nest? Roots on the Roof is the club that oversees the garden, and every Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. they open themselves up to volunteers who want to help maintain it. They’re also hosting a “Nights on the Roof” event on June 14 that features gardening, music and hanging out.
Yoga Classes with the UBC Yoga Club
The UBC Yoga Club is offering three different types of yoga classes four days a week until the end of June. For class locations and more info about the different kinds of yoga, you can browse through the club’s website.
UBC Dance Horizons Summer Workshop Series
The Dance Horizons club is hosting a series of dance workshops over the summer that are free to attend and open to everyone. Their first workshop is on June 10 and it focuses on hip-hop dancing.
Ballroom Dancing Classes with the UBC Dance Club
If you like ballroom dancing, you might want to check out the UBC Dance Club — they’re hosting ballroom dancing classes every Thursday from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Broadway Ballroom. Additionally, the Dance Club is also hosting a hike in Deep Cove in mid-July.
The eSports Association’s Overwatch and Hearthstone Tournaments
Can you kill it playing Overwatch or Hearthstone? Then you might want to try putting your skills to use at the UBC eSports Association’s two upcoming tournaments at WangYu Cyber Cafe. The Overwatch tournament is on June 10 — registration is required by June 9 and there’s a $5 sign up fee. The Hearthstone tournament is on July 17 — it’s a walk-in tournament and there’s no sign up fee.
Wheelchair Basketball with UBC REC
On June 16, June 30 and July 14, UBC REC is hosting three drop-in classes to teach people how to play wheelchair basketball. The first class will teach people the basic skills involved in maneuvering a wheelchair, the second class will focus on the types of passes and the third class will discuss shooting techniques.
The UBC Farm’s Joy of Feeding Festival and Fundraiser
“13 cooks. 13 countries. One delicious day.” That’s the premise behind this food festival, in which cooks from various nations around the world — “from Cameroon to Colombia, Indonesia to Iran” — will offer up their favourite home-cooked dishes at the UBC Farm. It takes place on June 24 and the event’s Facebook page predicts that it will sell out, so be sure to purchase tickets if it’s something you’re interested in.
Diving in Porteau Cove with the UBC Aqua Society
If you like to scuba dive, the UBC Aqua Society is going diving at Porteau Cove on July 15 and looking for people to join them. They’ll also provide a BBQ meal and 50 per cent off equipment rentals.
The Varsity Outdoor Club’s Summer Peak Bagging Challenge
Consider partaking in the Varsity Outdoor Club’s Summer Peak Bagging Challenge, in which climbers collect points based on the number of peaks they reach and the difficulty of the climbs they go on over the summer. There’s a variety of climbing-related prizes available to those with the most points.
