Beginning this Monday, anyone looking to enjoy a nice week of relaxation before the impending start of the semester need look no further than Main Mall for some fun, free events to enjoy the fine weather with.
Monday brings with it a so-called “Sports Extravaganza” from 11-2 p.m. Everything including soccer, bocce, frisbee, badminton and croquet. Meet at the fountain for this one.
Tuesday’s activity is a Main Mall Museum Crawl which is pretty much just a series of quick, back-to-back tours of the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, the Belkin Gallery and MOA. It may not be quite as outdoor-centric as playing frisbee but it’ll give you a great opportunity to catch the awesome Lawrence Paul Yuxwelupun exhibit at MOA and the Becoming Animal/Landscape exhibit at the Belkin before they end. The crawl will start at noon outside Beaty.
Wednesday’s feature is a popsicle party outside of the Bookstore from 12-2 p.m. There will be live entertainment that apparently includes “professional YoYo.” There will also be magic, though is there really anything more magical than a yoyo?
Thursday at 5 p.m. is the inaugural summer bike race. It is co-hosted by the AMS Bike Co-op and crosses most of the campus. There are prizes for the winner, the “first fixie,” (whatever that is) and whoever comes in dead last (which will be that one person who deliberately takes two hours to complete the damn thing). Project 529, which is a great anti-bike theft organization, will also be on site from 3 p.m. for those wishing to register their bikes.
On Friday, from 12-1:30 p.m. outside the Earth Sciences building, there will be “Yoga N’Yogurt” so that you can burn off some calories in a soothing yoga class and then undo all of your hard work with delicious Menchies frozen yogurt.
Alternatively, from 12-5 p.m. there will be a mobile tiki bar working its way around campus doling out free, crisp, refreshing and sadly non-alcoholic beverages to whoever can find and catch up to it.
The weather is supposed to be fantastic this week so head out and enjoy our wonderful campus before it becomes crowded by first-years. And if these free activities aren't fun enough for you, there’s no reason you can’t spike whatever that tiki bar is doling out or just head down to Wreck Beach and work on evening out that tan.
