Fringe 2015: The O.C.: The Musical

Vancouver-based writers Stewart Yu and Angela Wong, the creators of the 2012 “Pick of the Fringe” smash hit Riverview High, return to the Vancouver Fringe Festival, bringing with them their original, unauthorized musical parody of the 2003 hit TV drama, The O.C..

This over-the-top retelling of the popular ‘teen soap opera’ pokes fun at the pop culture of the 2000s and playfully mocks the trademark melodrama that made this series a cult-classic -- exaggerating tales of teenage love, angst, friendship and sex along the way.

The musical follows Ryan Atwood, a troubled bad boy fresh from juvie who is abandoned by his alcoholic parents, adopted by his public defender, Sandy Cohen, and thrust into the high-class, two-faced world of Orange County (O.C.). Atwood quickly develops an adorable bromance with his adopted-brother, Seth Cohen, falls for the girl-next-door, Marissa Cooper, and clashes with the popular crowd at school, all the while trying to survive in the cut-throat world of Newport Beach, O.C.. This Fringe must-see includes 18 original songs and features UBC alumni Stewart Yu and Kimberly Ma, as well as current UBC opera performance program student Jeremiah Carag.

The O.C.: The Musical promises to be a witty, fearless and unforgettable musical production, the likes of which the Vancouver Fringe Festival has never seen before.
