“E” is the most important letter in Vancouver this reading week

Reading week in Vancouver is a time when things happen. Flowers bloom, the sun shines, rain ceases to fall – hopefully. Midterms, of course, still threaten to make students want to drop as well – straight onto our pillows. But to take full advantage of the break is a wonderful thing because, after all, the meaning is in the name, isn’t it? The question is what is the best way to do so? Well, all you have to do is remember the most important letter this season: “E.”

Exercise

An opportunity to follow up on that new year resolution (if there ever was one), take the opportunity to exercise. Move around! Vancouver hosts a myriad of hiking and biking trails, the location of which can be found online on websites such as vancouvertrails.com. If that's not quite your thing, there are plenty of opportunities to appreciate the cold — but utterly enjoyable — Whistler, where you can ski and snowboard to your heart’s content or just enjoy some hot chocolate against a beautiful backdrop.

Or… you could just eat

Spring break equals extra time. Extra time equals a chance to try out new restaurants that you’ve never tried out before. Websites such as Trip Advisor and Yelp provide lists of the top rated restaurants in Vancouver and — considering we’re students — includes the price range. For those staying within the vicinity of the 99B-Line, we've compiled some recommendations here.

Explore

Exploring Vancouver can be likened to wandering in a utopian forest — there’s always something great out there. Witnessing the immense beauty of Sun Yat Sen Chinese Garden on Carrall Street makes for an incredibly unique experience in rain or shine. If rain is a worry, (it's Vancouver after all,) there is always the Bloedel Floral Conservatory on Cambie Street, which is not only a beautiful tourist attraction, but also a world famous filming location.

Educate – that’s not the same as studying

We can choose not to read and regurgitate, but experience and appreciate? Of course! For those of us who love art and culture, Vancouver boasts so much to explore. From the Museum of Vancouver on Chestnut Street, to the Vancouver Art Gallery on Hornby Street and Science World at False Creek, there's something for all.

Experience your wild side… or don’t

Vancouver boasts an impressive selection of bars and nightclubs where you can dance the night away. The Harbour Centre sees R&B superstars 112 live in concert on Thursday, February 11.  Nightclubs such as Venue, Portside, Celebrities and the Bimini all have special offers and events during the last half of February. For those who prefer a tamer night, W.I.S.E. Hall on Adanac Street hosts a cider and beer-tasting event.

Experience… your wild side…?

A different kind of wild… The Vancouver Aquarium and the Vancouver Zoo make for great places to visit between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The aquarium also hosts four different types of “sleepovers,” just for students. Curious?
