Vancouver International Film Festival (September 28–October 8, various locations)
Got a couple hours to kill? Need somewhere to take your date? Catch a movie at VIFF! Up and coming filmmakers are showcasing films of every genre imaginable, from documentaries and comedies to the experimental and avant-garde.

ARTIVISM 2023: Madness in the Masses (September 6–October 19, various locations on campus)
ARTIVISM is an annual visual and performing arts festival that aims to amplify the voices of marginalized artists while exploring topics related to social justice. This year’s events include an exhibition at the Hatch Gallery, playback theatre, a human library and a wrap-up party at Dorothy Somerset Studios.

MOA Unmasked: The Museum as a Classroom (October 12–13 at various times, Museum of Anthropology)
MOA Curator of Indigenous Programming Damara Jacobs-Petersen and MOA Education Coordinator Amina Chergui host a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum of Anthropology, with a focus on demonstrating the educational power of the art and artifacts found in museums.

Blank Vinyl Project Open Mic Nights (October 12 & 26, 7 p.m.–10 p.m., The Gallery)
Grab a drink and catch a few songs at BVP’s bi-monthly open mic night. Who knows — maybe you’ll end up wanting to sing a tune or two yourself! More information can be found on BVP’s Instagram page.

Support UBC’s Botanical Garden through this community fundraising event, which includes apple displays, food options and live entertainment. The ticket also includes full access to the Botanical Garden and Greenheart Walk.

Across Our Queer Bodies: A Sash Decorating Workshop Celebrating LGBTQIA2S+ History Month (October 15, 1 p.m.–3:30 p.m., Museum of Vancouver)
Queer interdisciplinary artist Sarah Wong hosts a textile workshop that explores sashes as wearable objects reflecting both glamour and movements of resistance. Sashes and materials will be provided. This event is only open to people who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+.

Check out panel discussions, poetry readings, masterclasses and more at the Vancouver Writers Fest! With a huge range of literary styles, as well as local and international authors, there’s sure to be something that appeals to every reader or writer.

Performance and Book Launch: Off Script (October 21, 2 p.m., Liu Institute)
Co-organized by the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, this double book launch features performative responses to two exciting new publications: Breaking Protocol by Maria Hupfield and Aural Poetics edited by Michael Nardone.

The Vancouver Mycological Society’s 42nd Annual Mushroom Show (October 22, 10 a.m.–3 p.m., VanDusen Botanical Garden)
