The October 2 event featured the latest works of three prominent food security experts: Public Policies for Food Sovereignty co-edited by Dr. Annette Aurélie Desmarais, Big Hunger by Dr. Andy Fisher and Food Bank Nations by Dr. Graham Riches.

As first reported in The Globe and Mail, the Association of Administrative Professional Staff at UBC (AAPS) — which represents 4,500 university employees — announced yesterday that they had helped six of their members file complaints against UBC and senior officials since May.
A Harvard-educated UBC associate professor is petitioning US Senators who are also Harvard alumni to vote against Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation as Supreme Court judge.
“Insofar as assessing teaching effectiveness is concerned -- especially in the context of tenure and promotion -- SETs are imperfect at best and downright biased and unreliable at worst,” reads the decision.
LeBlanc, who received his Ph.D. from UBC in environmental microbiology in 2015 is hoping to continue his predecessor’s legacy of pushing forward an agenda that strongly promotes sustainability within the Metro Vancouver regional district.
At its September 12 meeting, AMS Council unanimously approved the appointments of Frank Ju as ombudsperson and Halla Bertrand as elections administrator, who will both serve the student population independently from the AMS.
"What we’re trying to do is recruit from French immersion graduates here in BC, to grow our own population of French language teachers here and to work closely with faculties of arts and language departments,” she said.
UBC launched a national campaign on September 24 to showcase its new branding as a university engaged in “tackling society’s largest challenges,” following negative press attention and increased global competition in recent years.
“It’s a really important academic and student service components to this project … it’ll begin to create the student service precinct that we’re envisioning,” said interim Vice-President Students Andrew Parr.
“I was shocked that it was allowed to happen because there were elected officials in there and none of them stopped the process,” he said. “There was no other Indigenous people in there."
The “small partnership” between UBC and Simon Fraser University’s student unions for this year’s Welcome Back BBQ did not deliver a bump in sales — but both societies believe it was a positive experience that could lead to more collaborations in the future.
“It’s a discussion that really needs to happen after we develop an MoU and further understand the academic use [of the brewery] and how much is going to be brewed out of this,” he said. “Right now, the focus is on getting an MoU.”
In a joint ceremony on October 19, both universities will formally award their respective honorary doctorate of laws degrees — which recognize outstanding achievement or significant contribution to the public good — to the Aga Khan.
